Chatham's Myles McLellan is one of nine young people from across Canada to be selected as a Young Miracle Worker by CIBC World Markets.

The 12-year-old will receive a $500 Canada Savings Bond, as well as the opportunity to donate $2,500 to a children's charity of his choice.

The award was established in 2004 and is to be presented annually to young Canadians who work to improve the health, education and well-being of children in their communities, says a spokesperson. Myles, a student at Our Lady of Fatima School, was nominated by his teacher from the last school year, Dina Meriano.

"It's quite a win for him," Meriano says. "He's a real trooper."

The youngster's contributions have included the establishment of the Myles' Miracle Mission and the Quilt of Courage to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

He also raised $32,000 in 2004 for the Relay of Life event in Chatham, and has collected toys and delivered them to children in hospital at Christmas.

Myles has also raised enough money to help furnish the new pediatrics room at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, and has been invited to speak about childhood cancer to children at local schools.

Myles was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2002. He's the son of Wayne and Susan McLellan.

The McLellans were notified about their son's award in early February, and a formal announcement was made on Feb. 23.
